Kieschnick cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
ANALYSIS
With no team willing to take a flier on Kieschnick after he was designated for assignment last week, the 27-year-old will head to Salt Lake to serve as organizational depth. Kieschnick has hit .276/.339/.508 in parts of three seasons at Triple-A, but has done little to speak of in his 63 career games at the major league level (.200/.265/.248).

Opportunities to play at the big league level have been difficult to come by for Kieschnick. Most of his chances have come as a left-handed bat off the bench, split between the last two seasons with the Giants and Diamondbacks. That 63-game sample has translated to a .200/.265/.248 line with 45 strikeouts in 136 plate appearances, suggesting that he's overmatched against top-level arms. At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, the left-handed-hitting Kieschnick may simply need more consistent playing time to prove he can hack it as a big leaguer, but he's declined at the Triple-A level since debuting there with Fresno in 2012. Further, the combined .276/.339/.508 line over 1,073 plate appearances in the Pacific Coast League is much less impressive when considering the hitter-friendly nature of the circuit and that Kieschnick amassed those numbers between his age-25 through age-27 seasons.
The 25-year-old Kieschnick finally got his first taste of major league action in 2013, starting 21 games in left field for the Giants. After suffering a shoulder injury in 2012, the plan for him in 2013 was to get a full season of at-bats in the minors. But Kieschnick's numbers at Triple-A Fresno were hard to ignore (.273/.339/.497) and the Giants' lack of power from the left field position was well documented, so he was called up to bolster the team's underpeforming offense. The results weren't great once he reached the majors, as he only recorded one extra-base hit in 95 plate appearances and his already poor plate discipline was exposed (30.5 K%). The sample size was small, so there is still hope that Kieschnick's power potential could eventually translate to the bigs, but as of right now, he will likely start the 2014 season in the minors.
Kieschnick was the Giants' third-round pick in 2008 who repeated Double-A in 2011, but was able to put together a strong season in Triple-A hitting 15 home runs with a .306/.376/.604 line in 250 plate appearances. His season was cut short by a shoulder injury, but Kieschnick was able to post a career-best .297 ISO. His batting average was influenced by a .376 BABIP that will likely regress at any level, but he was able to improve his plate discipline by walking at a career-best 9.6 percent rate. Kieschnick's strikeout rate of 27.2 percent is something else to worry about, and is likely to begin the year in Fresno once again.
Selected in the third round of the 2008 draft, Kieschnick hit 23 homers with 110 RBI and nine steals at High-A San Jose as a 22-year-old last season, so he’s someone to keep an eye on long term. He also struck out 130 times over 517 at-bats, so improved plate discipline is a must moving forward. He could make the jump to Double-A Connecticut at some point this upcoming season.
