Valdespin (undisclosed) was activated from the 7-day IL at Triple-A Rochester and released by the Twins last Friday.
ANALYSIS
The 31-year-old missed a month due to injury and the Twins opted against adding him back to the roster at Triple-A. Valdespin's .294/.343/.444 slash line with Rochester this season looks pretty good at a glance, but offense is way up at that level; those numbers are just OK in context with the rest of the league (99 wRC+). A major leaguer from 2012-2015, Valdespin was gone from affiliated baseball the last couple years and this may be it for him.

The Mets reinstated Valdespin to the 40-man roster after he served a 50-game suspension in early August for his connection to the Biogenesis clinic, but he wasn't added to the big league roster. After a year where Valdespin hit just .188/.250/.316 in 66 games with the big club, while showing the same maturity issues that plagued him in the past, the Mets elected to non-tender him in December. Valdespin signed a minor league deal with the Marlins, with the hope of securing a bench spot on the Opening Day roster.
Versatility made Valdespin an asset last season as he appeared in games at all three outfield spots, as well as 16 contests and second base and four at short. The results with the bat may be skewed by the eight homers he hit in 191 at-bats, although Valdespin showed similar pop in 2011 at Double-A Binghamton. Patience is lacking in his skill set, as evidenced by a 10:44 BB:K during his time in the big leagues. Fortunately, his contact rate could improve from the 77 percent he delivered last season, as his numbers at previous stops as a minor league player often topped out at 83-85 percent. With a mix of moderate speed and power, he is more intriguing than many of the Mets' other utility options heading into spring training.
Valdespin had a breakout season for the Mets, moving from Double- to Triple-A. He hit .297/.341/.483 with 15 homers, 51 RBI, 62 runs and 33 steals to earn the promotion; the homers and steals were easily career highs. Valdespin struggled after the promotion, as his so-so plate discipline was exposed at the higher level, as seen in his 4:25 BB:K in just 107 at-bats. He did a much better job of controlling his emotions, which has plagued him in the past. Though Wilmer Flores has been viewed as the Mets' shortstop of the future, Valdespin could get a crack at the job if Ruben Tejada slumps or is better suited at second base.
