The Mariners signed Jerez to a minor-league contract Saturday.

ANALYSIS
The lefty last pitched in the majors in 2019, when he posted a 4.35 ERA across 10.1 innings between the Giants and the Pirates. It's unclear if and when Jerez makes an appearance on the Mariners roster, but he'll provide some depth in a bullpen that's lacking many left-handed arms.

Jerez impressed enough in 2015 -- his first full year of pitching after flaming out as a hitter -- to earn a spot on Boston's 40-man roster. He flashed potential in the lower levels of the minors and the organization was eager for him to gain more experience as a reliever at Double-A Portland in 2016. There was some thought that he could eventually move up to Triple-A Pawtucket, where he would be on the precipice of MLB, but he didn't develop as hoped. The 24-year-old left-hander maintained an ability to miss bats (9.0 K/9), but his command wavered (30 walks in 65 innings). He was outrighted off the 40-man roster this offseason and should simply serve as organizational depth going forward.

Jerez, a converted outfielder, earned himself placement on the 40-man roster after he turned in a successful season in 2015, his first full year as a reliever. He thrived at the lower levels (Low-A Greenville, High-A Salem) before getting into 22 games (37 innings) at Double-A Portland. His fastball sits in the low-to-mid 90s with some sink. The command will come and go, but he's essentially around the zone. His best secondary offering is a slider while the changeup lags behind that. He'll start 2016 at Portland to gain more confidence and experience. If all goes well, he'll get the call up to Triple-A Pawtucket where he'll be an injury away from Boston.

Jerez, a second-round pick out high school in the 2011 draft, suffered a hand injury in 2012 that ate into his development time. At present, he's a center-fielder with good instincts defensively, but his 6-4 frame could fill out in the coming years. The reduced playing time in 2012 hurt him offensively, where Jerez is below average in terms of pitch recognition and plate approach. If he's placed at Low-A Greenville, there may be some struggles initially. He'll be challenged as a hitter, but it will be a chance for him to adjust to better competition.

The Red Sox feel Jerez has five-tool potential, but at 19, he's very raw and needs to polish his skills. Things have come easy for Jerez, but he'll be dealing with an advanced level of competition and he needs to work on his swing and ability to hit secondary offerings. Jerez will start his career with Boston in center field, but he there's potential for his body to grow and he may find a home at a corner outfield spot. The Red Sox feel his defense is good enough to translate from center. If he can develop his swing in spring training, he could open the year at Low-A Greenville. Otherwise, he'll hang back in extended spring training and head to Short-Season Lowell in June.
