2014
Coming off a 2015 campaign in which he posted a 6.04 ERA and walked nearly as many batters as he struck out (3.9 percent K-BB%), Wright found himself slotted in as the Orioles' fourth starter to begin the year. Though he showed improvement in almost every facet of his game, he was still generally terrible and found himself demoted to Triple-A Norfolk by mid-June. The young righty bounced between Triple-A and the major leagues for the remainder of the season, logging nearly identical innings totals between each level. In 74.2 innings with the O's, Wright posted a 5.79 ERA, 15.2 percent strikeout rate and 7.9 percent walk rate. He fared much better at Norfolk, putting together a 3.07 ERA and a lower walk rate (4.6 percent) in 76.1 innings. Wright's first two years in the big leagues paint a bleak picture for his future outlook, as he doesn't figure to be a reliable MLB option anytime soon.
Wright had a tale of two seasons, dominating Triple-A but struggling when he got a shot with the Orioles. Big league jitters likely played a role in 2015, as his 5.24 K/9 was lower than at any level he has thrown at and his BB/9 was higher. He has a live arm and can reach the upper-90s at times, but his slider and changeup are secondary pitches that need some work. Wright had a 37.7% GB%, which led to nine home runs allowed in less than 50 innings. Wright has also had trouble keeping the ball on the ground each of the last three seasons in the minors. The Orioles have a history of moving starters to the bullpen and Wright looks like a candidate for this given his high velocity and lack of secondary stuff. For now, Wright should enter spring training competing for a spot in the rotation.
2014 was looking like a lost season for Wright at the All-Star break, as he was 1-8 with a 6.15 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in his first 18 starts for Triple-A Norfolk. The 6-foot-6 right-hander salvaged his campaign in the second half (1.90 ERA), thanks in large part to a dominant final month. In five August starts spanning 35.1 innings, Wright allowed all of three earned runs (0.76 ERA), with a .176 BAA and 27:8 K:BB. He allowed just 10 homers last season despite a 0.73 GO/AO, and while he's not an overpowering pitcher, his overall body of work was enough to convince the Orioles that he warranted protection from the Rule 5 draft. A third-round pick in the 2011 first-year player draft, Wright may not have the upside of some of his organization mates, namely Dylan Bundy and Hunter Harvey, but he's someone to keep in mind in case there are several injuries to the Orioles' rotation in 2015.
Wright turned in a solid season at Double-A. His control shined and with a 3.47 K/BB ratio. The Orioles promoted him to Triple-A for his final start of the season and he dropped 6.2 shutout innings. Wright complements a low-90s fastball with a good slider and a changeup. His future role as a starter or reliever is unclear at this point, and Wright should spend most of the season continuing to get exposure at Triple-A. If he proves capable of getting hitters out consistently in the International League, a late-season promotion to Baltimore is possible.
