Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2015
The once-promising pitching prospect has struggled to find a home after the Rockies designated him for assignment in early 2015. Aquino was acquired and cut four times in just 14 months before being claimed by the Orioles at the on-set of the 2016 season. He spent the vast majority of the season with Double-A Bowie, while also making brief appearances with Triple-A Norfolk and tossing 2.1 innings with the big league club. The young lefty had mixed results during his time at Bowie, posting a 3.90 ERA and 1.41 WHIP over 115.1 innings in the starting rotation. He has always displayed plus control of his pitches, as evidenced by his 6.6 percent walk rate, but he will need to improve his strikeout rate (15.4 percent in 2016) if he hopes to find consistent success at the higher levels. He likely won't be making any sort of fantasy impact in 2017.
After dominating at the rookie level over his first three seasons as a professional, Aquino has sputtered since advancing to the Sally League in 2013. That didn’t prevent the Rockies from having him open last season with High-A Modesto, where the left-hander failed to show much improvement with his numbers (5.84 ERA, 74:30 K:BB ratio over 95 innings). At 22 years old, Aquino has often been a year or more younger than his competition at every level, but his reliance on control (2.84 BB/9 in 2014) over making bats miss has proven detrimental in the more offensively-friendly environments of the minors. Since he’ll have to learn how to thrive in these conditions eventually if he hopes to reach the majors, the Rockies will likely baptize Aquino by fire again in moving him to Double-A New Hampshire for the upcoming season.
