The Rays released Healy on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Healy likely had the option of reporting to minor-league camp after he was informed he wouldn't make the Rays' Opening Day roster, but given the organization's considerable corner-infield depth at both the MLB and Triple-A levels, the 30-year-old may have decided he was better off pursuing opportunities elsewhere. Though he has a pair of 20-plus-homer seasons on his resume, Healy has logged just seven plate appearances in the majors over the past two years and underwhelmed with a .700 OPS during his 67-game stint in the Korea Baseball Organization in 2021.

Expected to become free agent

October 30, 2020
Healy is expected to refuse his outright assignment and become a free agent, Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Healy was outrighted to Triple-A San Antonio on Friday, marking the second consecutive season in which he's been outrighted to end the year. However, he's expected to refuse the assignment once again and elect free agency. The 28-year-old will likely get a chance to compete for a spot on a major-league roster during spring training.

Healy was a fun story when he first came up as he was not really on the prospect radar, yet had an excellent debut in 2016. He compiled at a respectable level in 2017 and 2018 before injuries and ineffectiveness set in. There is only so long a low-walk/high-strikeout-rate performance at the plate can carry a slow-footed corner man who has no defensive skills. Healy decided to take those skills overseas to the KBO for the 2021 season where his defensive challenges will fit right in, and his bat should have a better time with the overall lower velocity of the KBO.
Healy was afforded the first opportunity to take advantage of the lineup hole created by Kyle Seager's spring injury in 2019, but he did very little with it. After back-to-back 20-plus-homer seasons, Healy himself went down with a hip injury and never returned; he departed as a free agent after the season. His low average and OBP will limit Healy's suitors in the offseason, but he could compete for playing time in the corner-infield spots after signing with Milwaukee. If he can earn everyday at-bats, he has the potential to return 20-plus homers again.
By all measures, Healy was the same hitter in 2018 as 2017, but a .257 BABIP torpedoed his average and associated production. All of Healy's 2018 Statcast data was virtually the same as 2017 when he registered a .319 BABIP. The move to Safeco Field was parallel in terms of park factor so that wasn't the reason for the slide. It appears Healy simply hit into bad luck. His home-run total was unaffected, but a striking drop in doubles lowered his ISO and slugging percentage to career-low marks. Surprisingly, Healy struggled versus southpaws, something liable to be a one-year anomaly. He appears poised to return to 2017's level, but everyday at-bats are not assured. As of mid-January, the Mariners have a handful of other defense-challenged big-league-ready corner bats for him to compete with. Seattle is in rebuild mode, so Healy will need to be playing pretty regularly to compile enough counting stats to be useful in mixed leagues.
You know the saying, “That was good, now do it again?” That’s exactly what Healy did in 2017, although he didn't have quite as much luck on balls in play (.319 BABIP). Like many, Healy recently added some uppercut to his swing and he maintained the flyball gains as a sophomore. Not only that, he improved his hard contact rate, helping to mitigate even more batting-average regression. Healy did swing and miss a little more, which not a good thing in light of his paltry 3.8 percent walk rate. In addition, a whopping 11 errors in just 34 games at the hot corner pushed Healy across the diamond to first base (likely his primary spot with Seattle following an offseason trade) before he eventually settled in at designated hitter. In today’s environment, Healy’s power isn’t special, and with spotty plate patience and discipline, his average is a risk. However, dual eligibility at first and third is worth something.
Oakland's trade of Danny Valencia solidified Healy as Oakland's everyday third baseman and potential No. 3 hitter. He earned it for what he did to close out 2016, which included six home runs in September. While he was on the periphery of the discussion in prospect circles because of his raw power, he did not generate much buzz last preseason. A significant change to his swing path, however, would unleash untapped potential as he delivered more of an upward trajectory, which helped lead to his homer binge. He took advantage of some extremely advantageous hitting conditions in the minors to hit for high averages, but the 25-year-old doesn't look like a .305 hitter in the majors without an unlikely repeat of his .352 BABIP from last year. Considering the lack of hype surrounding Healy as a prospect, he is unlikely to be overpriced this spring, and could wind up being one of the cheapest 30-homer bats in fantasy drafts.
