Returns from hand injury

May 1, 2018
O'Malley (hand) is 3-for-11 in three games since returning from the disabled list for Triple-A Albuquerque.
ANALYSIS
The utility man was sidelined with a broken hand since spring training, but he was able to return to action with the Isotopes over the weekend after rehabbing at extended spring training to start the season. O'Malley has a unique profile as a switch hitter who can play both on the infield and the outfield, but his .231 career batting average in the majors suggests he's destined for an organizational depth role.

O'Malley had stolen at least 13 bases in every minor league season since 2010 before 2016, when he earned his first significant playing time in the majors. At the plate, he did little to build on the uninspiring stick work from his farm days. The bright side: He played six positions in the field, which kept him in the lineup even when he underwhelmed with the lumber. In many fantasy leagues, he may own additional eligibility at second base, which could pay off in American League formats, if he gets enough reps. He'll probably be part of a wild spring-training scramble for outfield playing time. Whether the 29-year-old will actually help will rely mostly on his speed, so don't expect much else across the board if he does net a role. Seattle may want to keep him as a utility plug-in, which would prevent him from consistent playing time.
A career minor leaguer, O'Malley has has shown the ability to get on base (career .350 OBP) and steal bases (206 in 10 seasons). After a strong season at Triple-A Tacoma last year in which he batted .337/.395/.452 against left-handers, O'Malley earned a September callup. In his first two games with the Mariners, he homered, doubled and stole a base. Those stood as the sum total of his extra-base hits in his 24 games, and he added just two more stolen bases the rest of the way. O'Malley knows how to draw a walk, though -- 12 in 57 plate appearances on his way to a .418 OBP. A versatile utility man, O'Malley can play all three outfield positions, third base and middle infield, which could give him an advantage in the battle for a bench spot. He'll compete with Luis Sardinas and Chris Taylor this spring for a utility role.
O'Malley signed a minor league contract with the Angels in January of 2014. After beginning his career in the Rays' system, he hit well as a member of the Angels' organization, tallying a combined .317/.400/.464 line in time split between three levels last season. This resulted in a callup to the big club when rosters expanded in September, but the 26-year-old did not fare well in his first test at the major league level, as he struck out in half of his 16 plate appearances, tallying just three hits over that span. Cups of coffee aside, O'Malley has shown the ability to get on base (career .351 OBP) and steal bases (186 in 721 games) in the minor leagues. The Angels released O'Malley in December, putting his short-term future in question, but he is unlikely to work into fantasy relevance in 2015 regardless of where he ends up.

Concussion
August 31, 2017
O'Malley, who remains sidelined with a concussion sustained at Triple-A Tacoma on Aug. 22, is not expected to be called up when major-league rosters expand Friday, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports. "Shawn has gone through a lot this season, between the shoulder issue and there's been a ton of different things that have come upon him this year," manager Scott Servais said. "So I don't know what kind of status he's in game-shape or if he can really help us."
