Chavez spent the season as the team's backup catcher filling in for Rod Barajas, hitting .258 with a pair of homers and 15 RBI in 159 at-bats. Barajas rejected the team's arbitration offer and will test the free-agent market. The Jays view Chavez as nothing more than a backup so they'll be looking to add another catcher this winter. He'll battle Kyle Phillips for the backup duties in spring.
Chavez made Brad Ausmus look like a good option with his '05 performance. Chavez has value only if you play in a nine-team NL Central-only set-up, and even then, take Einar Diaz.
Chavez is the personal catcher for Roy Oswalt and Carlos Hernandez, which in itself could land Chavez 40 percent of the time behind the plate. With Brad Ausmus turning 36 in Apr 2005, Chavez should be in line for plenty of time behind the plate and is the team's future backstop, at least for the time being.
An organizational solider who will enter the 2004 season as Brad Ausmus' backup, Chavez could easily be pushed aside when the Astros decide John Buck is ready. Look for him to be overmatched at the plate whenever he starts.
Chavez is an organizational soldier who might make the Opening Day roster if Gregg Zaun is slow to recover from offseason elbow surgery.
