Colbrunn missed the entire 2005 season due to a litany of injuries to his wrist, back and forearms. He's been an effective lefty-masher in the past, but will likely have to settle for a minor league contract with an invite to spring training if he wants to continue his baseball career.
Colbrunn has had trouble staying healthy, with just 90 major league plate appearances over the last two years combined. Given his two-year, $3.6 million contract, that's a A-Rod-esque $40,000 every time he stepped to the plate. Someone will likely remember that Colbrunn used to beat the heck out of lefties and invite him to spring training. If he's healthy and gets 200 AB, he could be a bargain.
Injuries wiped out most of 2003 for Colbrunn. The Mariners missed his bat off the bench, a role he again will fulfill this season. He hit .333-10-27 in just 171 at-bats in 2002 for Arizona. Given a full year (he had only 58 at bats last season), Colbrunn could be a solid utility man. He was traded back to the Diamondbacks for Quinton McCracken in December, and might see less playing time as a result, with Richie Sexson less likely to be given days off than John Olerud or Edgar Martinez.
Colbrunn went .333-10-27 in just 171 at-bats in 2002 for Arizona, and he'd do well as the right-handed bat in a first base platoon arrangement in 2003. Try to make him an everyday player, though, and his productivity would likely suffer. Backing up Edgar Martinez and John Olerud, he might be a neat late-round play.
