ANALYSIS
The Devil Rays didn't like Fordyce's offense, or lack thereof, in 2004, but Lou Piniella liked Fordyce's ability to handle pitchers, so the Rays could bring him back for 2005. If not, he'll catch on elsewhere.

Yet another sign that the Tampa Bay front office is getting smarter: both Lou Piniella and Chuck LaMar lauded Fordyce for his clubhouse leadership during the season, but once October hit, they wasted no time in letting his sub-.600 OPS go. He'll wind up somewhere as a backup catcher and be a fantasy non-factor yet again.
Fordyce will start once or twice a week behind the plate for the Devil Rays in 2004, backing up Toby Hall. With Pete LaForest waiting in the wings, he'll probably not be invited back for '05, so he'll be of value only in single-season, deep AL-only two-catcher leagues. Even at that, he's an endgame pick.
After hitting .301 in 2000, Fordyce signed a nice three-year contract, and then proceeded to go in the tank. The veteran catcher hit just .209 and .231 in 2001 and 2002, respectively. He'll back up Geronimo Gil.
