After clubbing 17 homers in 321 at-bats over the 2004 and 2005 seasons, Greene hit just two in 159 at-bats last year. Now 35 and with a career .286 OBP, he's nothing more than a backup.
Greene could see 200–250 AB backing up rookie J.D. Closser. He still has a little pop in his bat and might not be bad to stow away on your bench if Closser struggles.
Greene signed as the Rockies backup in December. He's a decent $1 catcher, in that he hits 10 homers but doesn't get enough at-bats to sink your batting average.
Give Texas credit. Instead of playing free-agent-to-be Bill Haselman behind the plate, Texas got a decent look at Greene the final few months. A couple of three-hit games late in the year skewed his batting average, but he's a guy who can mash lefties and play a little first, catcher and outfield. With the acquisition of Einar Diaz, Greene will be Texas' backup behind the plate.
