ANALYSIS
Vina has struggled with injuries over the past few seasons, so this isn't much of a surprise.

Vina missed all of last season because of patellar tendinitis in his left knee. The Mariners signed him to a minor league contract this winter to act as protection for young second baseman Jose Lopez in case Lopez shows he's not ready for a full-time job in the majors.
Vina was the biggest disappointment of Detroit's many offseason acquisitions last year. He hit just .229 in 29 games before missing the rest of the season with a hamstring and left knee injury. He chose to rehab his knee injury over surgery, and a setback this winter means he'll now miss spring training and possibly the entire season.
If he's healthy--a significant "if"--he'll play, given the Tigers' commitment to him. Because of that, Vina has to be taken seriously in AL-only leagues. If nothing else, he'll have the green light; Alan Trammell runs his guys like they're the labor in a Chinese sweatshop.
Vina went from a valuable .303/.357/.418 second baseman in 2001 to a nearly worthless .270/.333/.338 player last season. His walks actually went up from 32 to 44, and his very low strikeout total remained nearly the same -- 36 in 622 at-bats, but having an across-the-board dive in production in a year where your plate discipline improves can't be a good sign. Vina's 17 steals gave fantasy owners something to smile about, but he almost unbelievably scored just 75 runs in 621 leadoff at-bats. At age 34, we don't see a lot of room for improvement in his core stats, and if anything, we expect him to run less.
