Past Fantasy Outlooks
2005
2004
2003
After 13 years in the big leagues, Wilson is on his last legs, though they remain relatively dependable legs. The Mariners planned to reduce his role last season, but were forced to keep him as the No. 1 catcher because neither Ben Davis nor Miguel Olivo could master the position. Olivo enters 2005 as the starter, though Wilson will play about 40% of the time. He has a tendency to start hot (he hit .315 in April last year with a near-.800 OPS) before cooling off considerably in the second half. Don't be fooled.
This could be Wilson's swan song in Seattle. He's in the final year of a two-year deal and the Mariners are increasingly looking to Ben Davis. Wilson is a better real-life catcher than a fantasy catcher, where his solid defense and superior game-calling aren't recognized. His average dropped dramatically last season as did his on-base percentage. In AL-only leagues, Wilson makes for a safe bet as a No. 2 catcher, though some of your competitors may be tempted to pay the price that a No. 1 catcher carries - avoid that temptation.
Wilson is a decent second catcher in AL-only leagues and a decent backup in combined leagues. You can expect him to hit around .275 with 10 home runs and 45-60 RBIs, as he should play in around 100-110 games. But the Mariners might try to bring Ben Davis along a bit quicker, reducing some of Wilson's totals.
