Franco was designated for assignment by the Astros on Saturday, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The Astros have 10 days to either trade Franco, release him or send the 44-year-old left-hander to the minors. The move on Franco was done to make room for right-hander Ezequiel Astacio, who was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Reds.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2003
Franco is clearly on his last legs as a major leaguer. His ERA more than doubled between 2003 and 2004 and his WHIP is now greater than 1.50. For those who think he could be a serviceable lefty specialist, remember that he has never filled that role, and three of the six home runs he surrendered came against lefties.
Franco returned a little more than a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery in May 2002. Franco wasn't dominant against lefties, who hit .267/.297/.467 against him. After a rough July, Franco closed the year with two solid months looking more than the Franco of old than an old Franco. He recently re-signed with the Mets for his 14th year in the Big Apple and will reprise his role as a left-handed set-up man who will earn the occasional save.
Missed entire 2002 season due to his elbow injury, and isn't expected back until June 2003. Aside from possible late season sentimental reasons, his saves potential is nil.
