Sterling Hitchcock: Hoping for Spring Training Invite
PFree Agent
December 20, 2006
Hitchcock, who retired after the 2004 season, has been throwing and hopes to earn a major league spring training invitation, according to the North County Times.
ANALYSIS
The 35-year-old retired in 2004 because of injuries, primarily a left elbow strain. The Padres will look at Hitchcock this offseason, according to assistant general manager Fred Uhlman Jr. Hitchcock is a lefty, which dramatically increases his chances of earning a spring training invitation. He has a career major league record of 74-76 with a 4.80 ERA. Even if he gets invited to spring training, you'll want to wait and see how Hitchcock looks before picking him up.

Hitchcock's career ERA is 4.77. He's been under 4.00 in exactly one season, posting a career-low 3.93 back in 1998. He's also made more than $30 million for that work. There's a Nobel Prize in economics waiting for the person who connects those sentences. Hitchcock will start the year in the Padres' rotation; any value he might have will depend on the new park and the outfield alignment.
A strained groin and a sprained lower back cost Hitchcock much of the 2002 season, but that may have been a blessing for the Yankees considering how poorly he pitched when healthy. Given his ridiculous contract, he'll be on the roster next spring, but judging from his road splits during his only decent stretch of his career (in pitcher-friendly San Diego), Hitchcock isn't someone you want on your roster.
