Osuna is valuable as a middle reliever when healthy, but therein lies the rub. Injuries limited him to 31 games last year, with one injury coming right as the Padres made another roster move, leaving them shorthanded over a weekend series. He'll be looking elsewhere for work this year, after the Padres acquired Rudy Seanez.
Osuna, who was acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the Orlando Hernandez trade, was 2-5 with a 3.73 ERA in his first and only season in New York, but his shakiness on the mound left him off the roster for all three rounds of the postseason. He was not offered arbitration and thus will likely not be back in pinstripes.
Osuna battled minor injuries off and on all year, but his final numbers were solid, and he should be Billy Koch's eighth inning complement in 2003. His five year pattern is good year-hurt-good year-hurt-good year, so if you're the kind of person who believes in that sort of Saberhagen logic, stay far away from Osuna.
