The sidearmer made no one in Kansas City forget about Dan Quisenberry, inexplicably throwing gas on fire throughout spring training and in the early portion of the season. He fought back in May and June but compiled a 7.36 ERA in July and August, where a strained back ended his season. Signed for another season, Sullivan, should he rebound to career-standard levels, will provide trade bait for the youth-focused Royals.
The 500 innings he pitched between '97 and '01 caught up with him in 2002, but he rebounded fairly well last year. He could still be effective in the right role, and the right ballpark, but his days of being a bullpen horse are long gone.
Sullivan's season came apart after May 13th when he was hit on the pitching elbow by a hard shot off the bat of Richie Sexson. Heading into that game, Sullivan had a 2.13 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. Sullivan tried to return from the elbow injury too quickly and got knocked around, took a few cortisone shots to dull the pain and later came down with rotator cuff tendinitis. Sullivan led major league relievers in innings pitched for four consecutive seasons prior to 2002, so he may have been due for an arm injury anyhow. When healthy, Sullivan is a good endgame reliever who can give a lot of low-ERA and low-WHIP innings, if not saves or wins.
