Walker was released by the Orioles on Friday, the Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
The club no longer felt Walker was effective as a left-handed specialist, and he's giving up a .458 batting average to lefties so it appears the Orioles made a fair assessment. Left-hander Alberto Castillo was called up from Triple-A Norfolk to take Walker's job.

Although Walker had elbow issues and was not very effective all year, he actually found himself in a position to get saves after injuries to George Sherrill and Jim Johnson in September. However, the Orioles were horrid in September and Walker didn't record a single save. His chances at saves should be even more limited in 2009 as long as Chris Ray can make a successful comeback and Kameron Mickolio continues to develop.
The O's turned to Walker a whopping 81 times, in no small part thanks to the injuries suffered by Chris Ray and Scott Williamson, as well as Danys Baez. Right now the closer position is open to competition, but Walker has the inside track.
Walker quietly put together another solid season last year as Detroit's top lefty. He doesn't earn many strikeouts, however, because he usually only throws around 50 IP per season facing primarily left-handed batters. He is good at what he does and he won't hurt your ratios.
Walker has been a very effective reliever over the past four seasons and might have posted even lower ERAs had he been used primarily against lefties. Hopefully he'll slide into more of a specialist role in the future. He's not a candidate for saves but can be solid roster filler.
Walker established himself as the most consistent member of Detroit's bullpen in 2004. With both Ugueth Urbina and Troy Percival on the roster, Walker has little chance of assuming the closer's role, but he should provide the Tigers with some solid work again in 2005.
Walker pitched quite well for a disaster of a pitching staff, keeping his WHIP at 1.20 and limiting batters to a .247 BAA. He won't ever be more than a middle reliever, but the Tigers hope he can put up solid numbers in relief again, as their top-lefty.
Don't call Walker a specialist because this 31-year-old journeyman got lefties and righties out last year, though he had a few problems with the home-run ball. He's not guaranteed a bullpen job out of spring training, but he's probably got the inside track on a spot. Worth a buck, maybe.

Walker does not look like he will see save opportunities this season, as George Sherrill has been announced as the closer and Chris Ray has had a good spring. However, there is no report to say he is feeling any ill effects of an elbow injury that flared up late last season.
