Singed to a minor league deal by Houston in Jan. 2008.
The 36-year-old DeJean may be nearing the end of the line. He appeared in just two games last season before being sidelined by a right shoulder injury that required an operation in June. He's expected to be ready for spring training and will probably get a minor league deal with some club, but he'll have to show his shoulder is healthy before he gets to the majors.
DeJean made 38 appearances for the Rockies after being picked up off waivers in 2005, providing a 3.19 ERA and veteran leadership to a struggling bullpen. He'll be used in late-inning set-up once again in 2006.
DeJean floundered on the Orioles, but flourished with the Mets, with a 1.69 ERA in 21.3 innings pitched. His season came to an early end when a line drive off his shin was originally diagnosed as a bruise and a sprain before an X-ray revealed a fractured tibia. He should be Braden Looper's righty set-up man in New York.
His fantasy value is inversely proportional to the quality of his bullpen mates. DeJean isn't a good closer, just the guy who gets the job if no one else is available. Unless he's in a closer mix, you don't want him, because his ratios are poor.
DeJean was thrust into the closer role in 2002 and did a decent job. He finished with 27 saves while posting a 3.12 ERA in 75 innings of work. He's not the best closer in the league, but he got the job done. His biggest competition for the closer role will come from Luis Vizcaino, but DeJean appears to be the clear-cut favorite heading into spring training.
