Koskie has decided to retire, ending his comeback bid with the Cubs, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
Koskie had some symptoms similar to his post-concussion syndrome while playing on Thursday and decided it wasn't worth the risk to continue. Too bad to see his career cut off short.

Koskie missed all of 2007 due to post concussion syndrome. He says that he still wants to return, but it's now been more than a year since he last played in a game.
Koskie was having a fine season before a concussion ended it in July. He hit .261 with 12 home runs and a .343 OBP in 257 at-bats. The Brewers used him in a platoon with Bill Hall early on and that worked out well. With Hall moving to the outfield full-time this season, Koskie will play every day at third base. Top prospect Ryan Braun in knocking on the door, so if Koskie falters in any way then Braun will get a look.
Thumb surgery effectively wrecked Koskie's season, but he wasn't anything special before the injury. He's had one solid season since 2001 and even then hit just .251 with 71 RBI and 68 R. The steals that once boosted his value have evaporated and his other stats have been all over the map the past four years. With Troy Glaus now in Toronto, he was traded to the Brewers, where he'll compete for the starting job at third base and could be platooned.
Koskie has a strong eye at the plate, decent power and remains a great glove at the hot corner. The major concern for Koskie is his health as he only played 118 games last season due to sternum, wrist, hamstring and ankle injuries, and has only played an average of 130 games the last three years. Those nagging injuries have limited his ability to steal bases from the third base position which boosts his fantasy value. If he can stay healthy he could hit 25+ home runs and steal 10+ bases making him one of the better values at third base.
Koskie is one of the best fantasy third baseman in the American League due to his ability to steal bases in a weak field. Koskie rebounded from a poor season at the plate in 2002, but his power suffered due to a broken hamate bone in his right wrist which he played with the final two months of the season. Koskie did not hit a home run in the second half of the season as a result. The power should return to 20+ home runs this season and his patience at the plate should keep his batting average high.
After a breakout season in 2001, Koskie returned to earth in 2002. Hamstring problems limited his stolen base attempts, which is the key to his fantasy value. Will start everyday and is a good candidate to rebound to 2001 numbers.

Koskie, attempting a comeback after more than two years of severe post-concussion symptoms, left in the third inning Thursday after reporting that he didn't feel well about a half-inning after diving for a grounder, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. After a Cubs trainer tended to Koskie, he left the ballpark and was to be evaluated again Friday morning. ''When he dove for that ball, it caused him some problems, and when he said he wasn't feeling well, we got him out of there right away,'' manager Lou Piniella said.
