Meadows, 30, mixes in a mediocre fastball with an outstanding curve ball that he usually throws for strikes. He pitched well as a middle-inning reliever in 2005, finishing with a 3-1 record and a 4.50 ERA. However, one early season appearance (six runs in one-third of an inning) skewed his pitching numbers for the entire season. Regardless, the right-hander has more value as an innings-eater than as a viable fantasy performer.
Meadows, a converted starter, had a solid 2004 season, appearing in 68 games exclusively as a reliever, compiling a 2-4 record with an ERA of 3.58, while striking out 46 batters and walking 19 in 78.0 innings of work. From a fantasy standpoint, he does just enough to be a marginal reserve pitcher in deep NL-only leagues.
Meadows bounced between Nashville and the majors most of the year and was shifted from starter to reliever by the Pirates. His versatility makes him a name to remember when injuries hit, but he's only worth drafting or bidding on if you are in a very deep NL-only league.
After 11 starts and a 3.88 ERA at the end of 2002, Meadows will probably open 2003 at the back of the Pirates’ rotation. With no track record of success and a poor strikeout rate, it’s hard to see him as any more than a stopgap -- someone unlikely to last to the All-Star break. Draft at your own risk.
