After releasing Quinn in April, when a groin injury limited his spring play, the Cardinals signed him in June and placed him in Triple-A. Quinn has spent two full seasons out of the majors and is coming off of a .218/.299/.356 season in 24 games in Triple-A. He may be running out of chances.
The former Pacific Coast League ROY has fallen on hard times since his days as a top prospect with the Royals. He bouced around with four teams last season. His attitude has been called into question, and in combination with some health and plate coverage issues, he'll need to really make some noise this spring to stick with the Cardinals.
For most of his career, the pluses have outweighed the minuses. He is a confident hitter who hit 20 home runs and looked like a guy who could improve on that in 2000. After almost missing the entire 2002 season, the minuses (selectivity, defense, health) are becoming large factors for the Royals. With Carlos Beltran and Raul Ibanez deserving two of the spots and Ken Harvey looking like the full-time designated hitter, Quinn will be in a battle to regain his spot. Improving in at least one of those three problem areas is a must.
