Past Fantasy Outlooks
2004
2003
The Royals claimed Abernathy off of waivers last season and gave him the chance to earn a starting spot over Carlos Febles. Abernathy struggled and was sent down. He asked for his release and was signed by Detroit, where he might get another shot, although the Tigers' signing of Fernando Vina hurts his chances.
After a promising .270/.330/.382 BA/OBA/SLG debut in 2001, Abernathy suffered a disappointing 2002, falling to .242/.288/.311 with a brutal .599 OPS. Walks dropped from 27 in 2001 to 25 in 2002, even though his AB's increased from 304 to 463. Felix Escalona and Jay Canizaro could challenge Abernathy for the Devil Rays' starting 2B job in 2003, and even if he holds them off, Antonio Perez is only a year or so away. Only 18 steals in two years. Abernathy was the starting second baseman on the US Olympic team that beat Cuba for the Gold in Sydney in 2000, so he'll always have a warm spot in our hearts. However, even for an endgame pick in a deep AL league, you've got better options elsewhere.
