Perez parlayed a big year at Triple-A into a late season callup with Detroit. He played well and even took over most of the at-bats in left field for the Tigers, but his new team wasn't fooled by the short-term success. Detroit opted to trade for Jacque Jones to fill its left field opening and designated Perez for assignment soon thereafter. Perez showed enough at the end of last season to earn a new contract with the Tigers, but he probably won't have much of an impact in 2008.
The Tigers signed Perez to a minor league contract this winter. He'll likely start the year in Triple-A but could get a chance to fill a reserve role if the Tigers need an injury replacement for one of their outfielders this season.
Perez has built up enough veteran brownie points, and shows enough grit and hustle each spring, to hang onto a bench job despite not actually doing a whole lot to deserve one. He'll keep hanging on only so long as he can avoid completely tanking at the plate (something he flirted with last season), and not a moment longer.
Perez is a fourth outfielder on a team already featuring four starting outfielders, plus a much better reserve OF bat in Ross Gload. If he gets 293 at-bats again, manager Ozzie Guillen will have lost his mind.
Perez saw plenty of time due to injuries to Jeromy Burnitz and Cliff Floyd as well as the overall ineffectiveness of the rest of the Mets outfield. Perez was bothered by a sore right hand and calf early in the year then a sore left calf towards the middle of the season. He had a solid close to his season but showed that he is really a 4th outfielder and not someone who you would want to start on a daily basis, especially since he only had 28 at bats against left-handed pitching.
Perez may have been the most consistent Mets hitter last year, batting .295 and hitting lower than .276 only one month of the season. The problem is he doesn't have much power (eight home runs), and doesn't steal enough bases (10) to justify his lack of power, at least in roto terms.
