Bauer managed a tidy 3.55 ERA in 71 innings with Texas, but there's a poor 35:25 K:BB rate under the covers. He assumed the set-up role following the trade of Francisco Cordero to Milwaukee, and he's expected to fill a similar role in 2007 in what figures to be a young bullpen. There's little reason to expect a repeat performance.
At 29, Bauer will be past his prime in 2006. He signed a minor league deal with Texas in the offseason, and anything is possible in an organization that is even more pitching-depleted than Baltimore. Still, Bauer doesn't have the arm or the repertoire to accumulate significant fantasy numbers, especially in the bandbox otherwise known as Ameriquest Field, so stay away from him this season.
The light-throwing Bauer is a good enough pitcher to succeed as a starter at the Triple-A level, but with the Orioles’ commitment to improving their rotation, his chances of starting for the big club in 2005 lie somewhere between slim and none. If Bauer sticks with Baltimore, he’ll resume his 2004 role as the right-handed long reliever out of the pen.
Bauer has worked primarily out of the bullpen for the past three seasons with Baltimore, while getting some starts at the minor league level. There are others ahead of him for the fourth and fifth starter spots, but he could nail down a setup role in the bullpen.
Bauer was effective coming out of the bullpen last season with a 3.98 ERA in 56 appearances. A starter for most of his career, Bauer will be given a shot at the number five spot in the rotation. He pitched well in the second half, lowering his BB/9 rate and allowing a .235 average.
