Yates has been diagnosed with a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow, MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports.

ANALYSIS
Yates was finally healthy after a length recovery from Tommy John surgery in July 2009, but he'll now be shut down for at least another six weeks. The Pirates will reevaluate him at that time.

The Pirates got a decent amount of mileage out of Yates in 2008, pitching him in 72 games. The hard-throwing right-hander went 6-3 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. His inability to throw strikes prevented him from a shot at the team's closer job, however, when Matt Capps went down for nearly two months. Yates 63:41 K:BB ratio made many of his outings an adventure. As such, the 31-year-old should be viewed as a seventh or eighth-inning set-up man without much of a chance at picking up many marks.

Yates has carved out a set-up role in the Atlanta bullpen just two years after rotator cuff surgery. He strikes out better than a batter per inning, but walks a few too many batters. He's better than his 5.18 ERA indicates but needs to reduce the walks before we think he's someone who could be a closer in waiting to Rafael Soriano.

Yates, who missed all of 2005 after rotator cuff surgery, struck out nearly a batter per inning in relief for the Braves. He'll try to earn a role in the Atlanta bullpen again this season. He'll need to cut down on his walks to repeat his success, but his second full year back from surgery could see an improvement.

The Mets hoped Yates would be a key part of their 2005 bullpen, but he missed the year with a shoulder injury. If healthy, he will get a shot to compete for a middle relief role, where he can just let his pitches go rather than worrying about pacing himself, like he did when he tried starting in 2004.

Yates started the season as the Mets fifth starter following a dominant spring training, but quickly proved he was not up to the task. He excelled when put back in the bullpen, where he is able to just let it all go for one inning and saw the velocity on his fastball move back into the mid-90s. When he was recalled by the Mets in September he struck out 13 in 11 IP, and will get a chance to be part of the team's 2005 bullpen.

Yates was acquired from the A's in the David Justice trade. He spent 2003 regaining his velocity after missing most of 2002 recovering from Tommy John surgery. Yates pitched as a starter at all three levels in the minor leagues in an attempt to build his arm strength and stamina and should begin 2004 back in Triple-A.
