Thurston hadn't really gotten much of a chance to show his skills before last season, and after a strong start in which he had 11 runs and 11 RBI in the first month of the season, he became an afterthought the rest of the way. He had only 47 of his 267 at-bats after the All-Star break. After signing with Atlanta, he has a shot to win a job as a left-handed utility man off the Braves' bench.
In December, Thurston's contract was purchased by the Boston Red Sox, he will be a non-roster invitee in spring. Thurston is a minor league veteran second baseman who keeps putting up decent Triple-A seasons in hope of catching on. He could earn a shot in the majors and hit .270 with some walks and good defense for a manager who gives him a shot. He could finally get his chance with the Red Sox.
Thurston is a minor league veteran second baseman who keeps putting up decent Triple-A seasons in hope of catching on. He could earn a shot at the majors and hit .270 with some walks and good defense for a manager who gave him a shot. It's unlikely this will occur in 2007, but stranger things have happened.
Thurston continued to fade out of the Dodgers' plans with another mediocre season at Triple-A last year. He can't be completely written off but it looks like a bench job might be the best he can hope for in his career.
Over-hyped in spring training as the successor to Mark Grudzielanek for the Dodgers' starting second base job, Thurston failed to make the team and wasn't heard from again until September. His speed also suffered in 2003, as he stole only one base at Triple-A Las Vegas and was caught stealing 12 times.
The future at 2B. Never seemed to show up on prospect reports until last year despite steady production. Cruised to a .334 average and a .372 OBP at Las Vegas in 2002 and may have inspired the Grudzielanek/Karros trade as he's ready to take over at the keystone. Make him a late round gamble, in 2003.
