Adkins was traded from San Diego to the Mets in November. The 29-year-old spent most of the 2006 season with San Diego (he spent some time in Triple-A), and went 2-1 with a 3.98 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 54.1 innings. In 2007, Adkins is expected to fill a similar role with the Mets. He will pitch in middle relief and could bounce between Triple-A and the majors.
Adkins stagnated in Triple-A, walking too many batters and allowing too many home runs. Having been decisively passed by Brandon McCarthy in the pecking order, and with other younger pitchers about to do the same, Adkins seems destined for a nomadic life in the minor leagues.
For a time in the second half it looked like Adkins was getting the hang of things, in particular upping his K rate. His final numbers ended up being nothing special, but all things considered a baby step is better than none at all. The White Sox upgraded their pen over the offseason, so a major league job isn't a sure thing for Adkins.
The 'booty' in the 2002 Ray Durham trade, Adkins' awful 59/34 K/BB ratio in 123 Triple-A innings make the deal look more and more like a heist for the Giants.
At first glance, it looks like Adkins really turned his season around after being traded to the White Sox for Ray Durham as Adkins ERA went from 6.03 with Sacramento to 3.69 with Charlotte. His peripheral skills were just about the same though -- in fact his K/9 went *down* after the deal, and it wasn't all that special to begin with. He'll probably fill out the bottom of somebody's rotation someday, but there's no particular reason to think that will happen next year.
