The A's have released Bowen.
ANALYSIS
The team wouldn't fess up to it last week, but on Tuesday the move was made official. As someone who hit just .176 with one home run in 37 games last year, the absolute best Bowen can hope for is to get a No. 2 job with a team in dire need for an experienced catcher.

Bowen appeared in just 37 games and 91 at-bats in relief of Kurt Suzuki, a role he's expected to fill again in 2009.
Bowen enters spring as the A's primary backup catcher to Kurt Suzuki. He'll draw the occasional walk, which should be enough to hang on with the A's, but he won't get may at-bats.
Bowen carved out a niche as a defensive replacement and pinch-hitter as San Diego's No. 3 catcher in 2006. He has a solid glove and is faster than most catchers, but isn't likely to win a starting job anytime soon. He should serve as the Padres' No. 2 catcher in 2007.
Bowen's minor league stats took a step backward last season, and after several failed stints in the majors, he's nothing more than an emergency defensive call-up.
Bowen has shown enough strong defense at catcher to be a backup in the majors but has looked overmatched at the plate when called up with the Twins. As a result he's probably out of the picture for the Twins as a backup and may have to look to another organization to find a role in the majors. His minor league hitting stats before last season showed he could be a productive major league hitter.
Bowen gets lost in the shadow of Joe Mauer, but could be a nice backup. He has a good reputation for his defense and has a decent eye at the plate with some power. He'll try to win the backup catching job this spring.
Bowen has hit for power and showed proficiency behind the plate. The second-round 1999 pick is overshadowed by Joe Mauer, but may develop into a solid catcher in his own right.
