Madritsch won't pitch for Kansas City, which claimed the pitcher off waivers from Seattle, until at least the All-Star break after surgery on a torn labrum. Madritsch appeared in just one game for the Mariners in 2005 before suffering the season-ending injury to his throwing shoulder. In his rookie season in 2004, Madritsch was 6-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 15 appeances including 11 starts. While Madritsch still holds potential, this is his second labrum surgery.
The Mariners called up eight prospect pitchers in 2004, but Madritsch was the only to avoid growing pains. In 11 starts, he pitched seven innings nine times and allowed two runs or fewer in six starts, allowing just a .222 average against him. He's earned a spot in the rotation in 2005 as the fourth or fifth starter.
Madritsch is a hard-thrower who hits the mid-90s with his fastball and also has a good changeup. He doesn't have a good breaking ball, however. He still might need another year at Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners see him as solid lefty out of the bullpen. Signing lefty Eddie Guardado hurts Madritsch's chances of making the club, but he could still find himself in Seattle if Rafael Soriano is promoted to the rotation. The best bet, though, is he returns to Tacoma.
Madritsch is on the 40-man roster, but he is likely to spend the 2003 season in Double-A San Antonio.
