Hernandez signed a minor-league deal with the Indians and has been invited to spring training, the team's official site reports.

ANALYSIS
Hernandez hit .320 with 10 doubles and 26 RBI between stops at Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus for the Indians last year after joining the organization in July. He'll give the team some organizational depth behind the plate.

The 27-year-old Hernandez, who has four major league at-bats on his resume, will compete for the Cardinals backup catcher job in 2006. Even if he should land the gig, his playing time would be minimal behind Yadier Molina.

Hernandez is a career minor league backup catcher. He makes good contact, but even if he makes the Padres in 2005, he's no one to be concerned about.
