Fortunato, who was acquired in 2004 in the Scott Kazmir trade, pitched well in spring training before being sidelined for the season with a herniated disk that required surgery. He should be ready to compete for a bullpen job in spring training.
Fortunato, who was acquired from the Devil Rays in the Scott Kazmir trade, has resurrected his once-failing career over the past few seasons. His impressive work in Triple-A earned him a promotion to the Mets. His 94-96 mph fastball and above average slider should earn him a spot in the bullpen but he needs to work on his control to stick at the major league level.
We're still trying to figure out why the Devil Rays kept Fortunato, who'll turn 30 in August, on their 40-man roster, but didn't protect Mark Malaska, who was claimed by the Red Sox when the Rays tried to slip him through waivers. Fortunato did strike out 83 batters in 75 minor league innings last year, but all that tells us is that if Disney ever produces "The Rookie: Book Two," maybe Michael Badalucco can play Fortunato.
