ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old middle infielder holds a lifetime line of .274/.324/.351 in parts of eight minor league seasons. Lopez will likely start the season at the Triple-A level. He could serve as a defensive replacement for Pittsburgh at some point in 2009, but his career batting marks suggest he offers little in the way of fantasy value.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2007
2006
2005
Lopez added a bit of power to his resume in 2006, clubbing 10 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A. He also posted a .358 on-base percentage while in Double-A. His defense has always been strong, so some in the organization believe it's time to move Juan Uribe out of the way. If Uribe remains in 2007, Lopez will continue to make a case for a major league job while remaining ahead of Roberto Valido and Andy Gonzalez on the organizational chart.
As a 21 year old in the high minors with nothing but his glove to recommend him, Lopez hit about as well as you'd expect in 2005 - which is to say, not at all. He'll need to find some offensive skill to hang his hat on, and soon, if wants to have a career in the majors as even a utility player.
Lopez put up a superficially decent season in High-A that featured neither power, plate discipline nor even speed, but a lack of organizational depth at 2B has given him a prospecty sheen. We'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he hits Double-A for real, but after that all bets are off.
