Lambert, a first-round pick in 2004, has had his prospect star fade since draft day as his minor league performances have been unimpressive. Things turned around for him last year and he posted good numbers at Triple-A Toledo thanks to a decrease in his walk rate. Lambert eventually forced his way up to Detroit when the Tigers were in need of additional rotation depth. His performance in the majors was mediocre and it remains to be seen if the Tigers will give him a chance to earn a rotation spot this spring or if they have him ticketed for the pen. Opening the year back in the minors is also a strong possibility.
The Tigers acquired Lambert from the Cardinals for Mike Maroth last season. Lambert, a first-round pick in 2004, has a fastball that clocks between 89 and 91 mph to go with a curve, slider and change-up.
After 10 strong starts for High-A Palm Beach, Lambert was promoted to Double-A Springfield and seemed overmatched. He moved on to the Arizona Fall League, where his numbers just got worse (6.75 ERA in six starts). Still, the former first-round pick remains one of the brighter pitching prospects in the Cardinals system.
A hard-throwing 2004 first-round pick, Lambert was treated with kid gloves last season, averaging just over four innings per start at Peoria. This despite completing seven of 13 starts in his only season at Boston College. He struck out 46 in 38-plus innings at low Single-A, showing his live arm. But he's raw, so a quick climb through the minors should not be expected.
A high school shortstop and hockey prospect, the product of Boston College is unpolished having been a pitcher for only three years. He works in the low 90s and produces good life with his pitches including a knee-buckling curve. He’s inconsistent with his mechanics and control and probably just needs some extra work given the lack of time spent pitching prior to college.
