Considering that he has always been a little young for his level, Inman's progression through the Padres' farm system has been fairly impressive, being able to maintain a strikeout rate of over a batter an inning. That said, he still has some work to do in the control department, as his 2008 walk rate (4.7 BB/9IP) at Double-A San Antonio was too high. He will be asked to improve this at Triple-A Portland, and if he does, he could be on the fast track into the San Diego rotation.
San Diego may have robbed Milwaukee when it acquired Inman and two other minor leaguers for Scott Linebrink last July. He has electric stuff (180 strikeouts in 159.1 minor league innings last season), although he hit a snag at Double-A, where he posted an ERA close to 5.00 in 80.2 innings. Scouts want to see more consistency from Inman at Double-A in 2008, but he's only 20 years old and is still considered a strong prospect by many.
Inman is one of the top pitching prospects in the Milwaukee organization. The 20 year old went 10-2 with a 1.71 ERA in 110.2 innings Low-A West Virginia in 2006. He struck out 134 and walked just 24 while allowing just three home runs. He missed part of the middle of the season with shoulder soreness, but returned to pitch very effectively. The Brewers will be cautious with Inman and move him up to High-A this season. If he continues to pitch like this then expect him in Milwaukee in a few years.
Inman was taken in the third round of the 2005 draft and went right to work for rookie-level Helena. He posted a 58/11 K/BB ratio in 45 IP at just 18 and has a bright future with the Brewers.
