The vast majority of Petit's career has been spent at the Triple-A level of various organizations, and it seemed like more of the same for the journeyman in 2016. The veteran began the season with Triple-A Salt Lake, but thanks to an injury to everyday shortstop Andrelton Simmons, Petit was called up by the big league club. He took full advantage of his increased role, slashing .283/.331/.421 with 15 RBI through the end of July, but as his playing time dwindled, so did his success. The Venezuelan product registered only two RBI and two runs scored over the last two months of the season. He was non-tendered this offseason, and even latching on with Blue Jays on a minor league pact, his upside is limited to that of a reserve utility infielder given the more established options Toronto has.
For the past six seasons, Petit has been a Triple-A regular for five different major league teams, but he was rewarded with his first call to the bigs since 2009 after posting a .297/.340/.457 slash line with 10 home runs in 85 games for Oklahoma City. The 29-year-old appeared in 37 games as a utility infielder for Houston, but didn't make an impact with his bat and is far from guaranteed of a roster spot with Jed Lowrie, Marwin Gonzalez, Jonathan Villar, Joe Sclafani and possibly even Nolan Fontana to contend with during camp.
Petit continues to show little development in the minors, with significant batting eye issues, no speed, and only occasional power. He has yet to handle Triple-A batting with any sort of success, and he'll be ill-suited for anything more than a reserve role in the majors as a result.
Petit saw a handful of at-bats with the A's due to injury, but he's pretty limited at the plate and Cliff Pennington is more suited for a season-long utility role if the A's want to go that route.
Petit doesn't hit for enough power (.380 slugging, 26 doubles, six homers in 503 minor league at-bats in 2007) to project as a major league regular. Known more for his glove, he could be a decent utility player a few years down the road but there's not much here to like.
