Savery split his time between the majors and Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season. He saw most of his work with the Phillies in low-leverage situations. He also missed time with a sore elbow. The former first-round pick has failed to impress in the majors despite some solid numbers in the minors the past couple of seasons. The Phillies have a number of more interesting arms for their bullpen, so it would not be surprising to see Savery exposed to waivers this spring. He has the potential to be a decent second lefty in a relief corps, but his upside is quite limited.
Savery saw limited action with the Phillies last season and appears to be far down the list of left-handed options for the team's bullpen this spring. He posted a solid strikeout rate in the minors, but didn't see that translate to the majors last year. Savery deserves an extended opportunity, but that might not come with the Phillies given their other options.
Savery resurrected his career last season after being written off as a pitching prospect following the 2010 season. The Phillies had him open last year as a first baseman before converting him to a relief role in midseason. Savery thrived in the bullpen, finding the low-90s velocity on his fastball that had disappeared just a few seasons ago. He received a cup of coffee with the Phillies last September and will have a chance to compete for a bullpen spot this spring, as it looks like he has a future as a solid lefty reliever.
Savery, a former first-round pick, finished last year a combined 16-6 with a 4.40 ERA and a 96:77 K:BB ratio in 151.1 innings between Double and Triple-A. Savery has struggled with his command since he was drafted and saw his K:BB ratio decline after he was promoted to Triple-A (19:24 K:BB). He'll never be able to succeed in the majors with his inability to command the strike zone. The Phillies may have to convert Savery to a reliever and hope they can get something out of him that way.
Drafted out of Rice in 2007, Savery was solid in the low levels of Philadelphia’s system in his first year and was not bad with High-A Clearwater in 2008, going 9-10 in 24 starts with a 4.13 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 122 strikeouts in 150.1 innings. He’ll likely be up with Double-A Reading in 2009 and, should he keep progressing, could find a spot with the Phillies as early as 2010.
Savery is 1-1 in five starts with a 0.64 ERA over 14 innings in the Arizona Fall League. Savery had a 2.73 ERA and a 22:13 K:BB ratio in 27.1 innings for Low-A Williamsport after the Phillies made him the 19th pick in the 2007 draft. The Rice product should have a solid future as a starter.
