Gomez put together a strong minor league season with his bat to earn his first trip to the majors since 2011. He saw action in 15 games with the Brewers, but struggled to even make contact at the big league level. Gomez figures to compete for a utility spot with the Brewers during spring training, but he will have to show he can hit major league pitching to come away with a job.
Gomez spent 2009 at High-A and hit .275/.310/.423, continuing to be known more for his defensive ability than for his bat. However, he has some speed and he can steal bases, swiping 10 last season while being caught eight times. A move over to second base seems likely, and a future utility role may be in order if he doesn't improve his plate discipline during his ascent through the minors (he didn't draw a single walk during a 16-game stint in the Arizona Fall League). Even if he gets everyday at-bats down the road (think 2012), Gomez hasn't shown enough power early in his career for fantasy owners to put him away as a keeper at this point.
Gomez suffered a stress fracture in his shin on Opening Day, then blew out his elbow while rehabbing the injury, leading to Tommy John surgery. He's a toolsy shortstop who's young enough to still be a prospect after the lost season. He'll eventually need a position switch or organization change; both his body and bat could play in the outfield or at third base down the road.
