The 26-year-old Fontana reached the major leagues for the first time in 2017, cracking one home run (his lone hit) in 20 at-bats. Fontana will fight for the utility infielder job in spring training, though the offseason acquisitions by the Angels figure to keep Fontana down to start the year. If Fontana ends up finding some playing time, he could have value in OBP leagues, as his career OBP in the minors is .382. He has a bit of speed as well, but his impact in other categories will likely be minimal -- Fontana has hit just 7.9 homers per 162 games in the minors, with a career minor-league batting average of .244. It's difficult to imagine he will find both unexpected playing time and sudden power, which are the two things he will need to gain relevance in standard formats.
Fontana struggled mightily for Triple-A Fresno in 2016. He struck out 108 times in 407 plate appearances, a bad sign considering making contact had been his calling card earlier in his career. He hasn't had double-digit steals since 2013, and has never hit double-digit homers. At 25 and with the ability to play multiple infield positions, the hope is that Fontana can erase 2016 from memory and eventually become a contact-hitting utility infielder. Even in the rosiest of potential futures, it's hard to image Fontana ever having much fantasy impact even with a change of scenery after signing with the Angels.
In last year's full season with Triple-A Fresno, Fontana hit .241/.369/.357 with three home runs, 40 RBI, and a 99:74 K:BB over 117 games. While he may have a future in the big leagues as a utility infielder with an advanced feel for the strike zone, the 24-year-old obviously lacks power and speed and should not be on fantasy radars outside of super deep dynasty formats that score based on OBP instead batting average.
Fontana took the next step forward in his development with Double-A Corpus Christi last season, but suffered a broken pinky finger that required surgery and forced him to miss an extended period. Despite the injury, the 23-year-old middle infielder posted his third straight season with an OBP higher than .415 thanks to an incredibly-high 20.0% walk rate. His power disappeared (one home run) and he was caught stealing more often than he was successful (5-of-13), but it's clear Fontana has a future in the big leagues at least as a utility infielder who has an advanced feel for the strike zone.
Fontana, the Astros' second-round pick in 2012, spent his first full season at High-A Lancaster, where he hit .259/.415/.399 with a 102:100 BB:K ratio over 104 games. While the 22-year-old has an advanced approach at the plate, he lacks power in his bat (eight home runs) and is known more for his prowess on defense. A promotion to Double-A is likely this season and how Fontana performs there offensively should give us better insight into his future as a regular major league starter or utility option.
