Goforth inked a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Saturday which includes an invite to spring training, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Goforth spent the last few years with the Brewers, but only appeared in one major-league game in 2017, while spending most of his time with Triple-A Colorado Springs. At the hitters' friendly confines of the Sky Sox, he posted a 3.98 ERA and 38:26 K:BB over 54.1 relief innings. Moving forward, he will look to find a spot on the Opening Day roster with Washington, but is likely to wind up beginning the year at the Triple-A level.

Goforth turned in 10.2 horrible innings at the major league level, allowing 13 earned runs, three homers and 22 baserunners before he was swiftly returned to Triple-A Colorado Springs. There, Goforth walked over six batters per nine innings and struggled his way to a 4.91 ERA. He owns a 6.11 ERA and 4.86 FIP over 35.1 innings for the Brewers in the past two seasons, and with his lack of impressive numbers in the minors to back it up, it should come as no surprise that Goforth was outrighted off Milwaukee's 40-man roster. At 28 years old, he will struggle to get more chances to carve out a major league career.
After a strong 2014 season as the closer in Double-A Huntsville, Goforth followed it up with a solid season as a part of the bullpen at Triple-A Colorado Springs. He improved his ERA and K/9, but saw his BB/9 also rise during his tenure at Triple-A. Once he appeared in the majors, he produced a good 3.0 K/BB, but relied heavily on strikeouts to get outs as he had a very high .381 BABIP in the majors. After a steady rise through the Brewers system, Goforth has a good chance to compete for a bullpen role with the Brewers if he can show that he can get more groundouts.
The Brewers converted Goforth to the bullpen in 2014, but he spent the entire season at Double-A Huntsville, where he made 54 appearances and piled up 27 saves in 33 opportunities for the Stars. Drafted as a seventh-rounder out of Ole Miss in 2011, Goforth's arsenal simply didn't work in a starting role, but he boasts the premium velocity coveted in the late innings. Control has been an issue for him in both roles, and the 4.0 BB/9 (10.3% BB%) that he posted last season was the highest walk rate of his career. Added to the 40-man roster in November, Goforth may begin his 2015 campaign with the Brewers' new Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs. As one of the most hitter-friendly environments in the Pacific Coast League, he will be challenged to take the final step forward in his development, but the Brewers will almost certainly give him a look at the big league level at some point this season.
