ANALYSIS
De Jong appeared in six games for the Pirates in 2023, giving up 17 runs over 11.1 frames. He found more success in the minors with a 3.73 ERA and 1.70 WHIP, but he's unlikely to get more than a minor-league deal elsewhere given his rough MLB stats.

Adding split-finger fastball
PPittsburgh Pirates
March 3, 2023
De Jong has added a split-finger fastball to his arsenal, Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.
ANALYSIS
De Jong said the metrics have been "great" on it so far and that he'll essentially have the pitch replace his changeup, which he largely abandoned when he moved into a full-time relief role in 2022. He wound up posting a 2.64 ERA across 71.2 innings out of the Pirates' bullpen and should be called on in more key spots in 2023.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2017
De Jong, a second-round pick in 2012, found new life with the Twins after a midseason trade from Seattle. Minnesota had him stop using his two-seam fastball and focus on his four-seam fastball, which resulted in an increased strikeout rate (7.8 K/9 at Triple-A). De Jong earned a promotion to the majors as a result, where he continued to roll with a 3.57 ERA in four starts. De Jong wouldn't appear to have much upside with poor velocity (89.3 mph fastball) and as a flyball pitcher without great control. Still, he could carve out a productive role with the Twins if he can improve his command and the Twins can return to their outstanding outfield defense of 2017. He'll compete for a back-end rotation spot or long-relief role this spring, but likely needs to show his improvement is real with a return to Triple-A.
De Jong was acquired in July 2015 for international bonus slot money, which the Dodgers didn't need anyway because they had already well exceeded their pool. Since then, he has posted solid numbers as he's worked his way through the minors, progressing enough to where the Dodgers decided to add him to their 40-man roster for Rule 5 protection. He put up a 2.86 ERA in 141.2 innings with Double-A Tulsa this season, with a 1.03 WHIP and 125 strikeouts, earning promotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City at the end of the season. He was roughed up during the Pacific Coast League playoffs, allowing nine earned runs in 10 innings, but his overall body of work was strong. Given that injury woes forced the Dodgers to use 15 different starting pitchers in 2016 and 16 in 2015, it's quite possible that De Jong could find himself throwing a spot start or two in the majors by the end of the 2017 season.
