Mahoney has been outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mahoney showed solid pop in the spring but was unable to translate that success into production during an injury-riddled 2013 campaign. He battled an oblique injury to open the year and then suffered from a strained hamstring in late April, cutting short his shot at everyday at-bats in the majors. When healthy, Mahoney batted just .207/.218/.298 over 228 at-bats across two levels in the minors in addition to eight hits in 29 major league at-bats this season. Mahoney smacked five home runs in 73 games between the majors and minors and will be enter 2014 as little more than organizational depth for the Marlins.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2012
2011
Mahoney took a second pass at Double-A in 2011, hitting .289/.344/.502 in 355 plate appearances. Although that line would be good or even excellent at some positions, as a 24-year-old first baseman, it leaves a bit to be desired. Mahoney showed decent power, with 11 home runs and 24 doubles in just 85 games, but MLB first basemen average a .370 on-base percentage, a far cry from what Mahoney has managed so far in the low minors. He concluded 2011 with a nice stint in the Arizona Fall League (.325/.360/.542 with four home runs), and it's possible that Mahoney will be the first baseman summoned from Triple-A Norfolk this season should the need arise in Baltimore.
Mahoney had a breakout year and was promoted to Double-A where he didn't seem to be out of place. He's big at 6-7, 255, with lots of power potential and could continue to progress through the system quickly. Meanwhile, Brandon Snyder stalled as a prospect and he doesn't look like Baltimore's first baseman of the future anymore. That could open the door for Mahoney, if he keeps improving, by 2012. However, he's a bit old at age 24 to be a top prospect, so see how he fares at higher levels.
