Greg Dobbs

Following the Hanley Ramirez trade in late July, Dobbs found himself once again miscast as the Marlins' primary third baseman. He did manage a solid .285 batting average over 319 at-bats in 2012, but tallied just 26 runs, 39 RBI and five home runs en route to a .698 OPS; paltry production out of a poor-fielding corner infielder. Miami entered the offseason with a number of needs and having Dobbs atop the depth chart at the hot corner should be one that is addressed with urgency. If not, the pinch-hitting dynamo is likely to once-again post a decent but empty batting average over far too many at-bats.

Attrition ended up leaving Dobbs as the last Marlins' third baseman standing last season, but he didn't supply much offense beyond an empty batting average. With Hanley Ramirez moving to third base after Miami signed Jose Reyes, Dobbs will be used purely as a bench player. His inability to hit left-handed pitching (career .241/.280/.277 against them) will also limit his opportunities to play.

Dobbs struggled to find his stroke last season and eventually played himself off the Phillies' roster. A stint at Triple-A did not help get Dobbs' bat going, but he was recalled in September to give the Phillies some additional depth. The team designated Dobbs for assignment after the season and the backup corner infielder opted for free agency. He will have to settle for a minor league deal and try to earn a bench job this spring.

Dobbs saw his playing time cut back significantly last season as Pedro Feliz got off to a good start at third base and worked his way out of the platoon he had been in with Dobbs during the 2008 season. He also missed time with a calf injury that continued to be problematic after he returned from the disabled list. Even though his numbers were not stellar last year, Dobbs has proven to be a solid bench player during his time in Philly. His ability to play the corner spots assures him of a decent number of at-bats, but he's really nothing more than a roster filler in NL-only leagues unless injuries strike the Phillies.

Dobbs posted arguably the best season of his five-year career in 2008, finishing with a .301 batting average, nine home runs and 40 RBI in 226 at-bats. A reserve player entering the 2008 season, Dobbs has a chance to win a platoon role alongside Pedro Feliz at third base for 2009. He would be worth drafting as a late-round flier if he happens to win the job outright, although that doesn't appear too likely of a scenario. For the time being, he belongs in the free-agent pool and should stay there unless Feliz struggles mightily or gets hurt.

Dobbs isn't an everyday player at the major league level, but was part of a third base platoon with Abraham Nunez and Wes Helms. The career pinch-hitter did well in his role as a utility man, playing games at first base, second base, third base, left and right field, as well as 59 games as a pinch-hitter. Dobbs was able to hit career highs in every major offensive category after three seasons spent in Seattle as a backup. He will continue to platoon in Philly and should see a similar number of at-bats.

Dobbs shuttled between Seattle and Triple-A Tacoma throughout last season. He's not an everyday player at the major league level, but he could win a bench spot in 2007 with a little luck. OK, a lot of luck.

Dobbs struggled at the big-league level early in 2005, and the Mariners sent him down to work on not pulling the ball as much. After returning to Seattle in late August, he had a better approach at the plate and hit .269 in 108 at bats. A third baseman by trade, Dobbs can also play outfield. His future is murky, though. At best, he could win a spot on the bench in 2006.

Dobbs made his major league debut last season, but failed to impress. He had two extra-base hits in 53 AB and drew just one walk while striking out 14 times. His major league prospects don't appear bright, especially since he's behind Justin Leone in the chain and Seattle signed Adrian Beltre to a five-year deal. One of Dobbs or Leone could make the big league club, but it'd be surprising if it were Dobbs.

Dobbs was lost for the 2003 season after just three games with an Achilles tendon injury. Dobbs might be the best pure hitter in the organization. He's a career .307 hitter and could eventually find himself at third base for the Mariners. He needs more seasoning this year, but if the Mariners don't solve their third-base problem with a trade or free agent, Dobbs could be competing for the spot in 2005. He's a good keeper pick. His injury opened the door for Justin Leone, who likely will duel with Dobbs the rest of the way as the top third basemen in the organization.
