White was a pleasant surprise last season, emerging as a quality seventh-inning reliever after a mid-April callup. He had some early bouts of control problems, but in his final 21 appearances he walked just two (with 11 strikeouts) in 26.1 innings. He stranded 73 percent of his inherited runners and totaled 15 holds, a number that is likely to increase this season as the Mariners hand him the ball in the seventh from get-go. Right shoulder tendinitis ended his season early in mid-September, but he is expected to be healthy for spring training.
White entered spring training last season hoping to land a bullpen job, but instead spent the whole season at Triple-A. He didn't impress at Tacoma (1.2:1 K:BB, 3.74 K/9), and the Mariners took him off the 40-man roster in the offseason. The Mariners have plenty of potential bullpen arms, and White likely will find himself back in Tacoma this season.
White landed a bullpen job out of spring training last year largely because he was a Rule 5 pick. He didn't impress early, giving up 19 earned runs in 24.1 innings (7.03 ERA) with 11 strikeouts and 17 walks, before being sidelined by biceps tendinitis. Parking him on the disabled list was probably best for the Mariners because it allowed them to replace the ineffective Rule 5 reliever without having to give him back to his previous team. White returned in September and was a touch better. He'll compete for mop-up duty in spring again.
