2003
Daal was hurt for most of his tenure with the Orioles, starting only 17 games in his two seasons with the team due to a frayed rotator cuff and other shoulder problems. He’ll be hard-pressed to find work after sitting out the entire 2004 season.
Daal had a disappointing 2003 -- the first of a two-year free agent deal he signed. Ineffective pitching then a shoulder injury knocked him out of the rotation in June, and he never recovered. There's less pressure to have a lefty in the rotation because of the emergence of youngsters Eric DuBose and Matt Riley, and there will be other young starters to compete. The team is likely to sign a high-profile starter as a free agent, further hurting Daal's chances. They have to pay him, so he's likely to have a long relief role out of the bullpen.
Watch carefully where Daal ends up, and what role he takes on. He pitched far better as a reliever than as a starter, and also was better at home than on the road. Another disturbing indicator - in September, Daal went 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA and 1.83 WHIP. Buyer Beware.
