Claimed off waivers by the Padres in 2003, he faded badly in the second half posting a 5.30 ERA after the All-Star break. The left-hander had difficulty getting southpaws out. They hit him at a .294 clip forcing the Padres to seek a free agent to fill the situational hole in 2004. He's a lefty and will find work again, but he's certainly not a hot commodity.

Matthews was given a chance to start some games last fall, but it's doubtful the new Brewers management will use him in this role. He will probably end up in middle relief.

Matthews showed his athleticism when he dove to field Luis Castillo's sacrifice and tossed to first. But he landed on his pitching shoulder and was removed shortly thereafter from the Mets' 5-2 loss to the Marlins, the NY Post reports.
