Johnson washed out of two organizations before landing with the Reds in August. With his low strikeout rate, he's especially reliant on having good defense behind him. However, he'll be playing in Japan for the Seibu Lions in 2007.
Johnson has proven a durable starter, throwing 190-plus innings in each of the last three seasons. He's not an overpowering pitcher but has displayed solid control. Don't expect a great full-season ERA but the streaky Johnson can help if the timing is good.
Hopefully most fantasy owners were smarter than the Tigers front office last year and didn't use Johnson to anchor their pitching staff. He lost 15 of 23 decisions in 2004, and had ten outings in which he gave up five or more earned runs. There's no reason to expect a resurgence from the injury-prone Johnson this season. He's nothing more than bench fodder.
Johnson began the season in good form, but failed to win a game in the final six weeks of the 2003 season. Still, he tied a career-high with 10 wins. Johnson signed a two-year, $7-million contract with the Tigers in December. A mid-summer shoulder injury is chief among the Orioles' concerns about Johnson, but his spotty control (80 walks in 2003) is also a problem.
Johnson broke his finger, hurt his shoulder, then broke his finger again last season. In between, he received little run support (3.36) and was inconsistent, going 5-14 in 22 starts. He got hit pretty hard at times and hasn't been able to harness the success he had prior to the 2001 All Star break. Nevertheless, he will start the season in the rotation, but remains a risky proposition on a team that doesn't hit.
