Torcato was designated for assignment when Moises Alou was activated Friday from the 15-day disabled list, the Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Torcato hit .273 in limited action this season. San Francisco has 10 days to trade, release or outright Torcato to the minors. ``I just didn't get a chance,'' Torcato said. ``The last time I started (for the Giants) was 2002, and all I did since then was pinch hit. I hope somebody picks me up. I don't want to go to (Triple-A) Fresno. I've done all I can there. There's nothing to prove there.''

Torcato spent all but 14 games of the 2004 season in Triple-A Fresno and he'll stay in there again this season.
Non-prospect who looks better than he is thanks to guys like Todd Linden and Lance Niekro. The Giants have imported Michael Tucker to do the job that would have been Torcato's, so his fantasy value is nil.
Torcato was the Giants' number one draft pick out of high school in 1998, and he turned in probably his best minor league season in 2002, going .290-13-64 in 130 games at Triple-A Fresno. However, in those 130 games, he walked only 29 times and went only 4-for-10 in steals. With so many openings in the Giants' outfield this offseason due to free agent departures, he's got a great chance to make the team as a fourth or fifth outfielder, but he needs to have a really good spring, and Felipe Alou needs to notice it if he does. Drawing more walks would help, because he posted a .429 slugging average at Fresno last year. Check his spring; if it appears he'll make the 25-man roster, he might be worth a dollar play in deep NL leagues.
