Zinter (torn labrum) will miss the rest of the season, the Arizona Daily Star reports.
ANALYSIS
According to the report, Zinter will undergo surgery soon. He went on the DL at the Diamondbacks' Triple-A Tucson affiliate two weeks ago. Zinter was hitting just .216 with two homers, and at age 37, the major surgery may be enough to force the minor league vet to call it a career.

Take a moment to celebrate Zinter, a living Crash Davis who got just his second big-league cup of coffee in a 16-year pro career that's taken him from St. Lucie to Tacoma and everywhere in between. He'll get a spring NRI with the D-Backs again this year but won't get much big-league playing time.
Zinter is a Crash Davis-type career minor leaguer, except he's more versatile (he can play corner infield and outfield positions as well as catch). If he gets the call to the bigs in 2004, it'll likely be for just a cup of coffee as a short-term replacement bat.
Zinter toiled in the minor leagues for 14 seasons before getting his first major league chance with the Astros. He's off the 40-man roster again, so it'll take an extenuating set of circumstances for him to get his second chance.
