Walker seems determined to disprove the adage that all you need is the ability to pitch left-handed to keep a job in the majors. His strikeout numbers remain solid, but he simply gets hit too hard to be a reliable bullpen option.
The Giants claimed Walker off waivers in April 2004 and sent him to Triple-A Fresno. He's struggled with elbow problems for a good portion of his career and hasn't been able to gain momentum.
The left-hander, signed to a one-year deal in the offseason, looks to rebound from an injury-plagued 2003 campaign. He was bad in the majors and even worse in his time in the minors. As a southpaw with closer-type stuff, he simply needs to get healthy and exhibit some control. He has the ability to dominate lefties and right-handers alike and that bodes well for his long-term prospects in the bullpen.
Came back from Tommy John Surgery in August of 2002. Prior to the injury, Walker was expected to be a big part of the Padres bullpen and if he returns to his regular spot in the pen, he could be a good candidate to vulture a few cheap wins throughout the season.
